Substitution tables and writing frames
Substitution tables are a great tool used to assist children with sentence structure. There are many differences in the languages around the world. For example, in some language a determiner is not used, or an adjective comes after the noun. This is very challenging for our EAL learners when learning the English language, as well as developing an understanding of the different curriculum areas.
Substitution tables provide learners with a modelled sentence structure, in which they pick one option from each column – left to right – to create several sentences, using the set pattern. It is a very useful resource that supports the different stages of second language acquisition, language specific to different areas of the curriculum, as well as focusing on a specific area of grammar to ultimately promote independent learning.
